The Home-Appliance Recall Index: 29 Million Units Recalled, Counted by Category (2015-2026)

An independent tally by The Home Picker of every U.S. consumer-product recall in four home-appliance categories — robot & cordless vacuums, air purifiers, space heaters, and countertop kitchen appliances — using the public CPSC / SaferProducts.gov recall database. We sum the recalled unit counts nobody else adds up.

Key findings

  • More than 29 million units of home appliances were recalled across these four categories from January 2015 through July 2026, spread over 76 separate recalls.
  • Fire or burn hazards drove 83% of the recalls (63 of 76) and about two-thirds of all recalled units.
  • Countertop kitchen appliances dominate: ~25.8 million units (88% of the total) — led by a single 8-million-unit food-processor recall and a 4.8-million-unit portable-blender recall.
  • ~99% of recalled units were made in China (66 of 76 recalls involved a China-made product).
  • The problem is current, not historical: 4.4 million units across 16 recalls in just the last 24 months.

Recall press releases always report one product at a time. What no one publishes is the sum — how many units of a whole appliance category have been pulled from American homes, and for what reasons. The Home Picker built that number directly from the government’s own data, and we keep it current. This page is free to cite; if you quote a figure, a link back to this page is all we ask.

U.S. units recalled by home-appliance category, 2015 to 2026: kitchen countertop appliances 25.8 million, space and electric heaters 2.6 million, vacuums 784,460, air purifiers 207,690.

Recalled units by category

Category Recalls U.S. units recalled Most common hazard
Countertop kitchen appliances 42 25,830,645 Fire / burn
Space & electric heaters 21 2,614,830 Fire / burn
Vacuums (robot / cordless / stick / upright) 11 784,460 Shock & fire
Air purifiers 2 207,690 Fire & shock
Total 76 29,437,625 Fire / burn (83% of recalls)

A conservative count that removes one re-announced recall (to avoid double-counting ~350,000 units) is 29.09 million. Either way, the total is more than 29 million units.

What’s being recalled, and why

Kitchen counters are the epicenter. Two recalls alone account for nearly 13 million units: the 2016 Cuisinart/Conair food-processor recall (about 8 million units, blade laceration) and the 2023 BlendJet 2 portable-blender recall (about 4.8 million units, fire and laceration). Pressure cookers and multi-cookers (SharkNinja, Best Buy’s Insignia, Crock-Pot, Sensio) and a wave of air fryers (COSORI, PowerXL, Insignia) make up most of the rest — overwhelmingly burn hazards.

Space heaters are small in number but serious. Twenty-one recalls, about 2.6 million units, and effectively all of them fire or burn hazards — including a Vornado electric-space-heater recall that was re-announced after a reported death. Heater recalls also recur by brand across years.

Vacuums skew to electrical and, more recently, battery-related fire risk. Older recalls (Shark, Dirt Devil, RIDGID) were shock hazards from cords and plugs; recent cordless models (BISSELL, Brookstone, Rowenta) have been recalled for fire and burn hazards tied to their rechargeable systems.

Air purifier recalls are rare — only two in this window — but not zero: the 2026 Aroeve recall covered roughly 191,000 units for fire and burn hazards.

Hazard breakdown

Hazard Share of recalls Share of recalled units
Fire / burn 82.9% (63 recalls) 65.8%
Laceration 6.6% (5 recalls) 31.2%
Shock / electrocution 10.5% (8 recalls) 3.0%

Laceration shows up in only five recalls but nearly a third of all units, because the two biggest recalls in the entire index — food processors and blenders — are blade-injury recalls.

Where recalled appliances are made

Across all 76 recalls, 66 involved a product manufactured in China, accounting for roughly 99% of recalled units (based on the manufacturing country stated in each recall notice). The remainder were made in the United States (4 recalls), India (2), and one each from Mexico, South Korea, France, and Canada. This mirrors where the appliances themselves are manufactured and is not, by itself, a statement about any one brand.

Methodology & sources

All figures come from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission public recall database, accessed through its SaferProducts.gov REST API on July 25, 2026. Our process:

  1. We pulled every recall published from January 1, 2015 through July 25, 2026 by date range (not by the API’s product-type search, which only indexes older recalls).
  2. We classified each recall into one of four home-appliance categories by matching product names and types, excluding out-of-scope items (leaf blowers, water heaters, pool equipment, blender bottles, built-in ranges, and similar).
  3. We recorded the CPSC-reported U.S. unit count for each recall (foreign quantities excluded) and summed by category, hazard, and manufacturing country.

Every recall in this index has a published U.S. unit count — none were estimated or omitted for missing data. CPSC does not publish a single fixed hazard code per recall, so hazard categories here are our own classification, based on reading each recall’s official description (e.g. “fire,” “burn,” “laceration,” “shock”). Because a few recalls list more than one hazard, we tag each by its primary hazard; category totals are therefore directional at the individual-recall level but robust in aggregate. The window is 2015–2026, so figures represent that period, not all-time. For the complete record-by-record list and the exact queries used, see our data appendix (available on request) or the CPSC database directly at SaferProducts.gov and CPSC.gov/Recalls.

A note on why we built this: The Home Picker is an independent home-product review site. If you own a product named here, always follow the official remedy on CPSC.gov — this page is a summary, not a substitute for the official recall notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many home appliances have been recalled in the U.S.?

More than 29 million units across 76 separate recalls in four categories — countertop kitchen appliances, space and electric heaters, vacuums, and air purifiers — from January 2015 through July 2026, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall database.

Which home appliance category is recalled most?

Countertop kitchen appliances, by a wide margin: about 25.8 million units, or 88% of the total. Two recalls dominate — an 8-million-unit food-processor recall (2016) and a 4.8-million-unit portable-blender recall (2023).

What is the most common reason home appliances are recalled?

Fire or burn hazards. They account for 83% of the recalls (63 of 76) and roughly two-thirds of all recalled units in this index.

Where are most recalled appliances made?

Of the 76 recalls, 66 involved a product manufactured in China — about 99% of recalled units. The remainder were made in the United States, India, Mexico, South Korea, France, and Canada.

How current is this data, and how often is it updated?

The figures were re-pulled directly from the CPSC SaferProducts.gov database and verified as of July 25, 2026. We refresh the index quarterly as new recalls are published.

Last updated: July 25, 2026. This index is refreshed quarterly as the CPSC publishes new recalls. Methodology by The Home Picker editorial team. Questions about our data? See our How We Test page.
