A bulb camera lives or dies on details that never make the headline: socket size, how deep your sconce is, whether the wall switch has a dimmer, and what happens to recordings when someone flips that switch. Wyze answers most of that in public — on its Bulb Cam Tech Specs page, across eleven Bulb Cam support articles, and in the Quick Start Guide PDF that ships in the box.

Two notes before the numbers. We have not had this camera in our hands — every figure below is Wyze’s own or a line from the Amazon listing, and we say which. Where Wyze has not published something a buyer wants, we say so in one line instead of guessing; there is a section of those below.

*Wyze publishes two field-of-view numbers for the same camera: the tech spec sheet says 166° diagonal, while the marketing copy and the in-family comparison chart both round to 160°. We quote both rather than split the difference. †The same split hits Wi-Fi: the product page lists “IEEE 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz, Wi-Fi 6”, the Tech Specs page only “IEEE802.11b/g/n.” The band is settled: 2.4 GHz. The thing most people get wrong: it aims by hand, not by app

The Bulb Cam does not sit rigidly wherever the socket happens to point it. The camera module hangs off a telescopic rod with 1.18 in (3 cm) of travel, and Wyze’s instruction is explicit: “Manually extend, rotate and tilt the camera to find just the right angle.” The Amazon listing quantifies it — “Position camera by hand (360° pan, 90° tilt) to eliminate blind spots” — and Wyze’s setup guide makes it a step: “Pull down on the camera to extend the telescopic rod if needed.”

The real limitation is the other half of that sentence. Ask Wyze whether the app can move the camera and the FAQ answer is one word long: “No, the camera position must be manually adjusted.” Amazon’s listing repeats it in capitals: “Fixed position once set; does NOT rotate remotely via app.” So if a delivery driver walks out of frame, you do not re-aim from the couch. You get a ladder. For a porch light covering one approach that is a non-issue; for a driveway you expect to track, it is the reason to buy something else.

Will it fit your fixture? The numbers that drive returns

Five minutes with a tape measure, before you order.

  • Socket: E26 only. Wyze: “Make sure it’s a standard E26 socket that is compatible with A19 shape bulbs, with a power output bigger than 15W.”
  • Hard incompatibilities: “Not compatible with E17 sockets, fully enclosed fixtures, or integrated LED lights.” And separately: “Wyze Bulb Cam is not compatible with fully-enclosed light fixtures.”
  • Sconce depth: “It fits most sconces with an inner depth of less than 7.87 in (20 cm), from socket base to sconce edge.” Go deeper and, in Wyze’s words, “the sconce may obscure the camera’s view.”
  • Bottom opening: the Amazon listing adds a figure Wyze’s own pages do not — “fits sconces depth <7.8" & bottom opening >2.5".”
  • Clearance: “For optimal performance, the camera lens must extend beyond the bottom edge of your light fixture or sconce. Viewing through glass or fixture housing can cause motion detection issues, unwanted reflections, and poor image quality.” Budget for a 9.45 in body, fully extended.
  • Outdoors: “Wyze Bulb Cam is IP65-rated and can be installed indoors and outdoors.” The caveat is the socket, not the camera: “most socket adapters are not waterproof and must be covered.”
  • Too big a fixture? Wyze’s answer: “For larger sconces, we recommend using a Wyze Lamp Socket and Wyze Cam v4.”

Two prohibitions printed in the box that listings tend to bury

The Quick Start Guide carries these in capitals, and they are the two most common ways to buy this camera and be unhappy with it:

  • “DO NOT use a dimmer switch or timer for this product.” The guide’s notes explain why: “This device will not operate properly when connected to a standard incandescent dimmer or dimming control.” Wyze’s troubleshooting article says the same thing from the other direction — if your camera will not power on, “we recommend moving the camera to a different socket, as dimmer switches are not recommended.”
  • “DO NOT use in totally enclosed luminaires.”

Three more from the same page: “Risk of electric shock – Do not use where directly exposed to water,” “Not for emergency lighting,” and “Added weight of the device may cause instability of a free-standing portable luminaire” — at 0.84 lb, this is a heavy bulb.

And the wall-switch problem everyone asks about? Wyze ships the answer in the box, literally: “1x ‘Do Not Turn OFF’ Sticker.” The fixture has to stay powered. That sticker is the manufacturer conceding the point.

The honest part: what Wyze does not publish

We went through the tech spec sheet, eleven support articles and the Quick Start Guide. Wyze answers none of these buyer questions, so we are not going to invent answers:

  • Motion detection range in feet. Not published.
  • Night vision range in feet. Not in any Wyze document. The Amazon listing’s details table gives “35 feet”; Wyze publishes only the illuminator, “4 x 850nm IR LEDS, 1 W.”
  • Incandescent-equivalent wattage (the “60W equivalent” figure on ordinary bulb boxes). Not published — only total draw, 15 watts, and output, up to 800 lm.
  • Whether it keeps recording to the microSD card when the wall switch cuts power. Not published. The only power source Wyze lists is “120V AC E26 Socket,” and no battery or backup power appears anywhere in the specs or the guide. Plan around the sticker, not around a hope.
  • Video bitrate, codec, or how many people can watch the live stream at once. Not published.

What it costs to run

The strongest argument for this camera is the one the box does not shout about: you can run it for free. Wyze’s FAQ is unambiguous — “Record 24/7 locally with a microSD card up to 256 GB (sold separately)” — and the Amazon listing labels it “24/7 Local Recording(No Subscription Required).” In the app you enable Record to MicroSD Card and select Continuous. Buy a card once, pay nothing after.

The subscription buys cloud and AI, not basic function. Cam Plus is “$2.99/mo per camera · 30-day free trial,” which gets you “Cloud video recordings saved for 14 days” plus “Person, Pet, Vehicle, and Package detection.” If you are covering several cameras, Cam Unlimited “offers unlimited licenses for $9.99/month or $99/year.” Cloud storage on this camera requires one of those — Wyze lists cloud video as “stored in the AWS cloud (Wyze Service subscription required).”

One optional extra: the Bulb Cam can “auto-connect and synchronize the lighting of up to 5 Wyze Accessory Bulbs (sold separately),” which are $16.98 each on wyze.com and are 800-lumen dimmable bulbs “designed for Wyze Bulb Cam.” It turns a multi-socket fixture into one light group without a second camera.

What to buy instead if the Bulb Cam does not fit

You want a lot more light: Wyze Floodlight v2

Same 2K resolution, but 2800 lm against the Bulb Cam’s 800, a colder 5000K, and a louder siren at 105 dB. The cost is installation: it wires to a junction box, not a bulb socket, so it is an electrical job rather than a two-minute swap. If your complaint would be “not bright enough for the driveway,” this is the answer. See Wyze’s comparison chart.

Your sconce is deeper than 20 cm: Wyze Lamp Socket + Wyze Cam v4

This is Wyze’s own recommendation for fixtures the Bulb Cam cannot see out of: “For larger sconces, we recommend using a Wyze Lamp Socket and Wyze Cam v4.” It splits the job: the socket adapter takes the power, the camera sits where it can see. In Wyze’s chart the Lamp Socket is 1080p with a narrower 130° view and an 80 dB siren — you trade resolution for placement freedom. Compare all three.

You want the camera to move from your phone: Wyze Cam Pan v3

If the manual-aiming limit is the dealbreaker, the Pan v3 is the fix — Wyze bills it as a “360° 1080p Cam with Night Vision” at a regular price of $44.98. Read the resolution line carefully: 1080p is a step down from the Bulb Cam’s 2K, and it needs its own outlet and mounting spot. You buy motorized aim and pay for it in pixels and installation. The verdict

Buy it if you have an open E26 socket, a sconce under 7.87 in (20 cm) deep with a bottom opening over 2.5 in, a dimmer-free circuit that can stay powered, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and a spot where 800 lumens of fixed 3000K light is enough. At $49.98 with free 24/7 microSD recording, a 95 dB siren, two-way audio and an IP65 camera body, that is a lot of hardware for a bulb-swap install — and in Wyze’s own light-camera comparison chart only the junction-box-wired Floodlight v2 matches its 2K resolution.

Skip it if the fixture is fully enclosed, if the socket is E17 or an integrated LED, if the circuit runs through a dimmer or timer, if your Wi-Fi is 5 GHz-only, if you need to re-aim the camera from the app, or if you need more than 800 lumens. Each is a published, checkable disqualifier — cheaper to discover now than after installation.
