# How the 12 were found, so the completeness claim can be checked rather than taken on trust: every CPSC recall announced 2016-01-01 to 2026-08-21 was pulled from the SaferProducts REST API month by month with NO keyword filter - 3,324 distinct recalls, deduplicated by recall number because consecutive month buckets share a boundary date and the API range is inclusive at both ends, so the 96 recalls dated on the 1st are returned twice (3,420 raw rows) - and then screened three times with filters of different breadth, the results diffed against each other. A narrow product-name filter (electric blanket|heated blanket|heating pad|mattress pad|throw blanket|warming blanket) returned 10; widening it to form and body words (throw, wrap, pad, foot warmer, bedding, sherpa) returned 14, of which 12 are in scope. The narrow filter missed 26-652 and 18-702 - the largest and the only U.S.-made recall - because neither title carries a brand or the word blanket. # Excluded, infrared sauna blankets (body-wrap wellness devices, not bedding): CPSC 26-036 Lifepro Bioremedy, 2025-10-23, about 78,000 units, 65 incidents, 32 burn injuries; CPSC 26-511 Tzumi SLF, 2026-05-28, about 3,600 units, 6 incidents, no injuries. Including both would take the totals to about 741,000 units across 14 recalls, 878 incidents and 76 injuries - so this exclusion moves the injury figure by 73% and the unit figure by 12%. Electrically heated apparel and hand warmers are also outside this scope.
# One of the twelve Sold At sentences is abridged and marked with an ellipsis: 18-732 lists sixteen television channels and platforms before it reaches the dates. The elided span sits entirely before the sale window, so the parse stays checkable against the notice. Every other quotation in this file is complete.
# Provenance, stated as what can be checked rather than what we did: every hazard and incident sentence in this file is diffed character-for-character against the CPSC SaferProducts database on every build (build_blanket_csv_live.py --verify). 11 of 12 match exactly. The one exception is 16-762, where the API's hazard text is shorter than the published notice and this file follows the notice. The API's retailer field for 25-351 is also wrong - it says Amazon where the notice says walmart.com - and this file follows the notice there too. Anyone can re-run that diff; nobody can re-run 'we read the page'.
# Sale start and end are parsed from the CPSC Sold At statement in the column beside them, which is transcribed from the live notice. An earlier build took these dates from the SaferProducts API instead, and got 25-351 wrong by 33 months - the API's retailer field for that recall is the one this project had already documented as incorrect. If a date here looks wrong, check it against the sentence in the same row first.
# Months from last sale to recall is NOT a measure of how fast CPSC moved. Firms commonly halt sales while a recall is negotiated, and a sale-end date can equally mean inventory ran out, so the column is partly definitional. Months on sale is the exposure window and is the honest quantity - though it is confounded with units sold and sales channel, which is why 23-735 generated 137 reports in three months while others ran for years with a handful.
# Unit counts are CPSC's published U.S. figures. Units sold in Canada are excluded and noted here: 19-077 about 3,600 in Canada; 23-157 about 15,000 in Canada.
# Dates are the Recall Date printed on the notice. CPSC assigns recall numbers and files notice URLs by its own fiscal year, so 18-702 (announced Nov 2017), 21-708 (announced Nov 2020) and 24-034 (announced Nov 2023) carry a number and URL from the following year.
# There is no denominator. Total units sold is unknown, so this data cannot express a failure rate or a per-unit risk.
# The count columns are taken from the CPSC sentence in the column beside them. An EMPTY numeric cell means the notice does not publish that figure, which is not the same as zero - read the 'Fire count published by CPSC' column to tell the two apart, and do not sum a column without checking it. Three notices publish an explicit fire count: 18-100 (2), 25-351 (2) and 26-652 (27). 19-077 is recorded as zero throughout because its notice reports no incidents of any kind. 23-735's 137 reports include products catching fire, but CPSC publishes no fire count, so that cell is empty rather than estimated. 19-077, 23-157 and 24-034 report zero injuries.
